my 10 favourite quotes
I often use quotes in my posts to lend weight to my point; if you have been reading my blogs you will have seen several of them. probably my most used one being a quote from Steve Abrams
“I will not be an artist until I have created a piece of work that cannot be discussed, only felt.” Steve Abrams
this is such a powerful statement and sums up what I want from my art. I have no idea who Steve Abrams is or even where I got this quote from; I have been using it for some time now and always kinda meant to look him up. I just did and drew a blank! so if anyone knows about him please share in the comments below
very much in the same vein this quote from Paul Burlin (1886 – 1969) an abstract expressionist painter.
“In the process of making a painting in an abstract way, the painter is in search of a reality. Not one of realistic objects, but of the complete end result. The painting is experienced as a whole, and must evoke in the painter the absolute conviction that this is how it should be and no other way” Paul Burlin
“I do not believe that a person of real sensibility ever stands before a picture and, after a long process of analysis, pronounces himself pleased. We either like at first sight, or not at all.”
Sir Herbert Edward Read, (1893–1968) was an English poet and literary critic, best known for numerous books on art, which included influential volumes on the role of art in education.
I use this quote when confronted with objections; that art isn’t worthwhile if it has no meaning
John Hoyland said this about his medium: “Paintings are there to be experienced, they are events. They are also to be meditated on and be enjoyed by the senses, to be felt through the eye… Paintings are not to be reasoned with, they are not to be understood. They are to be recognised.” RWA Art Magazine 03 2010
John Hoyland (1934-2011) was one of the leading British painters of my generation.
another very powerful quote that has great resonance with me is from Thomas Murton No Man is an Island
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
this is precisely why art has been my life saver and giver.
Thomas Murton (January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968) a prolific American writer and Trappist Monk
“Once in his life a man . . . ought to give himself up to a particular landscape in his experience, to look at it from as many angles as he can, to wonder about it, to dwell upon it. He ought to imagine that he touches it with his hands at every season and listen to the sounds that are made upon it. He ought to imagine the creatures there and all the faintest motions of the wind. He ought to recollect the glare of noon and all the colours of the dawn and dusk.”
David W Orr is a well known environmentalist
the following is a reminder to me to celebrate difference and not to shun or sham it; it is an important quote and I try to make it my mantra. It is not always easy though!
“Blessed are the gypsies. The makers of music, artists, writers, dreamers of dreams, wanderers and vagabonds, children and misfits: for they teach us to see the world through beautiful eyes.” anon
this one helped me to find me again, when aged sixty I found myself alone; after a lifetime of being part of a couple / family
“What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes? Herein lies the key to your earthly pursuits.” Carl Jung
I remembered and found the artist within, it had been suppressed all those years and freed again aged 62 yes it took me two years to find me again
Carl Gustav Jung (1875 – 1961) a Swiss physiotherapist
I have to include a quote from Albert Einstein; in fact there are so many wise words from him I found it impossible to stick to one.
“Do not grow old, no matter how long you live. Never cease to stand like curious children before the Great Mystery into which we were born.”
I hope I never stop being curious about this Universe in which we live
finally a quote for all you artists out there
Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955)
“logic will get you from a to b. Imagination will take you everywhere”
